TRANSFER STUDENT

Sometimes the university you are studying on does not really fit you. We help you with getting your previous university subjects recognised and transfer to a more befitting university.

Is It Possible to Transfer Between Medical Schools?

Short answer is YES!

Medical students have the legal right to transfer from one university to another. In addition, their current university is required to provide a transcript and a letter of evaluation to another institution upon the student’s request.

However, not all universities accept transfer students, which is why many students search for a list of medical schools in Europe that allow transfers. Universities in the UK generally do not accept students who have transferred from foreign institutions. At the same time, universities in the United States are less likely to recognise credits (courses) completed at non-US schools. European universities tend to be the most flexible in this regard, as their requirements are relatively liberal.

Basic Requirements for Transferring Between Medical Schools

The following rules of thumb can help you determine whether transferring to another medical school is possible:

  • At least one year of study is typically required before you can apply as a transfer student.

  • Most universities accept transfers at the start of the academic year, although some institutions may make exceptions.

  • Transfer applications are considered only if places are available in the programme at the receiving university.

If you meet the criteria above, your application should satisfy the basic requirements for transferring to many medical schools.

Will I Need to Repeat Any Semesters After Transferring?

Medical schools that accept transfer students must compare the applicant’s transcript with their own curriculum. Because medical programmes often differ—especially between universities in different countries—schools need to ensure that incoming students meet all academic requirements for graduation according to their curriculum and national regulations.

As a result, transferring students may be required to complete additional courses that were not included in their previous programme. In general, the further along a student is in their studies, the more likely it is that curriculum differences will appear. For example, a student transferring after the first year will usually need to make up fewer courses than someone transferring after four years.

In most cases, students are asked to complete no more than one or two additional semesters’ worth of coursework. This is a normal part of the transfer process, and small differences may exist between universities due to variations in their individual curricula.
