Transfer From Gdańsk to UPJŠ Medicine: 2026/27 Costs

Let me be upfront: the Medical University of Gdańsk is a good school, and this post is not about talking it down. But every month students message us about one specific thing, the cost of finishing their MD in Poland. Several of us at Medently transferred to UPJŠ Košice ourselves, so here is the honest cost math for 2026/27, plus exactly how the transfer works.

The 2026/27 cost math, side by side

Two things in that table matter more than the headline numbers. First, MUG bills in złoty, so if your funding is in euros or another currency, your real cost moves with the exchange rate every single year. Second, UPJŠ locks your tuition when you enrol: the fee you sign up at is the fee you pay until you graduate. Over the remaining three or four years of a degree, that predictability is worth real money.

Living costs: Gdańsk vs Košice

Gdańsk is a beautiful coastal city, and like most popular Polish cities it has seen student rents climb. Košice is one of the more affordable university cities in the EU, and most of our students share modern flats close to the faculty. We will not throw invented rent figures at you, but the pattern from students who have made the move is consistent: monthly costs in Košice tend to land noticeably below a comparable setup in Gdańsk, which compounds nicely with the lower tuition.

The two official routes into UPJŠ

Everything below comes from the official UPJŠ transfer and recognition rules, which is the only source you should trust on this:

• Route 1, formal transfer: for students in good standing who have met all conditions to continue into the next academic year. You submit the signed Request for Transfer by 15 August. This route is not available for interrupted or terminated studies.
• Route 2, subject recognition: open to anyone who passes the UPJŠ entrance exam. You then apply for recognition of your previously completed subjects by 15 September, and the faculty decides which subjects count and which year you enter.

One important rule: you cannot both request a formal transfer and sit the entrance exam for the same programme in the same year. Pick the route that fits your situation, and if you are not sure which one that is, that is literally what our free calls are for.

What actually gets recognised

• The 5-year rule: a course counts only if you completed it within the last five years.
• Graded courses only: a UPJŠ subject graded by grade is recognised only if it was graded at your previous university. A course you only passed comes across as passed, grade E, sufficient.
• Curriculum match: the subject must be a compulsory or compulsory-elective subject in the UPJŠ curriculum, from another faculty of medicine at the same level.
• The fee is tiny: 2 € per subject, capped at 15 € in total.
• No finished degrees: you cannot transfer credits from a study that already ended with a degree.

Which year you enter is decided case by case by the faculty once they see your transcripts and syllabi. Anyone promising you a fixed outcome before that review is guessing, so we will not do that.

What the paperwork looks like

For recognition you send the Application for Recognition, original transcripts with completion dates, course syllabi and proof of payment. For a formal transfer you add the Request for Transfer, a Letter of Authorization and proof that you are currently a student. Everything must be officially translated into Slovak or English, and incomplete requests are rejected, so this is the part where having someone check your folder before you submit genuinely pays off. Can I transfer from Gdańsk to UPJŠ after finishing my degree?

No. Credits can only be recognised from an unfinished study. A completed degree cannot be transferred.

For the subject recognition route, yes: you pass the entrance exam first, then apply for recognition by 15 September. The formal transfer route by 15 August is a separate process for students in good standing and does not combine with the exam for the same programme in the same year.

How many years will I have to repeat?

There is no fixed answer. The faculty reviews your transcripts and syllabi and decides your entry year case by case.
