Transfer From Wrocław to UPJŠ Dentistry: 2026/27 Guide

I'm Omar, one of the dental students on the Medently team, and "can I transfer from Wrocław to UPJŠ dentistry" lands in our inbox more often than you'd guess. Short answer: yes, and you keep your completed credits. Longer answer: it depends on which route you take and how your Wrocław transcript maps onto the UPJŠ curriculum. That mapping is the whole game, so that's what this post actually does.

Quick credibility note. Several people on our team transferred to UPJŠ themselves, our founder Saif studies there right now, and we've walked students through this exact paperwork. Nothing below is theory.

The two official routes to transfer from Wrocław to UPJŠ dentistry

Everything runs off one official UPJŠ page, and it describes two separate processes. People mix them up constantly, so here's the clean version.

Route 1: the formal transfer (by 15 August)

This is the prestup, and it's for students in good standing only. You must have met every condition to continue into the next academic year at Wrocław. Interrupted, terminated or expelled studies don't qualify. You send a signed Request for Transfer to the Study Department by 15 August, and there's no entrance exam on this route.

Route 2: entrance exam plus recognition of subjects (by 15 September)

Open to anyone who passes the UPJŠ entrance exam, including students whose studies were interrupted. You sit the exam, get admitted, then apply for recognition of your completed Wrocław subjects by 15 September. The faculty decides which subjects count and which year you enter.

One rule people miss: you can't do both for the same programme in the same year. Pick a lane. I walked through the same year-placement logic in our Zagreb to UPJŠ guide if you want a second example.

Wrocław DMD vs UPJŠ MDDr: the curriculum, year by year

Here's the part nobody else has actually done. Both degrees are now five years. Wrocław's English Division Dentistry is five years of uniform studies, and UPJŠ became the first faculty in Slovakia to cut Dental Medicine from six to five years, accredited in February 2025 and starting with the 2025/26 intake. The five-year and six-year cohorts run side by side until 2030, so which cohort you join depends on your entry year.

And let's be fair, Wrocław is a genuinely good school. The English Division has been running since 2003, theory is taught in groups of 10 to 12, bedside teaching in groups of 4 to 5, and you do phantom work before your first real patient in year three. The point of this table isn't that one programme is better. It's that the structures line up well enough for a transfer to make sense.

What UPJŠ would likely recognise from Wrocław

Both programmes put dentistry-specific subjects into year one. At UPJŠ that means Propedeutics of Dental Medicine 1 and 2 plus Chemistry of Dental Materials sitting alongside Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, Medical and Human Biology and Medical Biophysics, 60 credits a year per the official curriculum. Wrocław covers the same preclinical ground early, which is exactly what recognition needs. So the strong candidates are anatomy, histology and embryology, biology, biochemistry, biophysics, and your preclinical and phantom dentistry work.

But I have to be honest here. The faculty decides case by case, after they've seen your transcript and syllabi. Nobody can promise "you'll only repeat one semester" in advance, and anyone who does is guessing. These are the rules they apply:

• Five-year window: only subjects completed within the last 5 years count, measured from the start of the academic year.
• Matching programme: the subject must come from another Faculty of Medicine at the same level, in the same or only slightly different programme.
• It must exist at UPJŠ: only subjects that are compulsory or compulsory-elective in the UPJŠ curriculum can be recognised.
• Grades matter: a graded UPJŠ subject is recognised only if Wrocław graded it too. A subject you merely passed comes over as E, sufficient.
• No finished degrees: credits from a completed, degree-awarded study cannot transfer at all.
• The fee is tiny: €2 per subject, capped at €15 total.

What you'd repeat or add

The one guaranteed add is Slovak. UPJŠ requires Slovak Language 1 to 4, and it's a hard prerequisite for the Professional Clerkships, 80 hours in year two, 120 in year three, another 120 in the final phase. Your Polish classes, which Wrocław runs so you can talk to patients from third year, don't carry over. Different country, different patients. The upside: if you already handle some Polish, Slovak comes fast, and the programme itself stays fully in English.

Beyond that, expect to top up subjects UPJŠ sequences differently. Conservative and Prosthetic Dentistry start in year three, Dentoalveolar Surgery in year four, and Orthodontics, Paediatric Dentistry and Periodontology in year five, before state exams in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthopedic Dentistry and Therapeutic Dentistry plus the thesis defence. If Wrocław covered something on a different timeline, you fill the gap in your entry year.

The entrance exam, if you take the recognition route

It's 200 multiple-choice questions, 100 biology and 100 chemistry, in 150 minutes, and dentistry admission has needed roughly 620 of 800 points. For someone who has already survived a year or two of dental school, this is familiar material, but prep properly anyway.

And relax about timing. Sittings run through the summer and you can usually sign up until about a week before one. The next in-person sitting is 12 August in Košice, and Medently registers you for free. Our UPJŠ flashcards and mock exam exist precisely for this.

The money: 78,700 PLN vs €13,500

New 2026/27 admits at Wrocław pay 78,700 PLN a year for Dentistry, with 24 places and a last-admitted score of 145 of 300 points for 2025/26, so it's a competitive, in-demand programme. Cohorts from 2023/24 pay 65,000 PLN a year. UPJŠ charges €13,500 a year for Dental Medicine students admitted in 2025/26, in two instalments due 31 August and 1 March.

Against the current Wrocław fee, UPJŠ works out roughly a third cheaper per year, and the whole-degree maths is flat multiplication: five years times €13,500 is €67,500. That flat multiplication is the point, by the way. Once you enrol at UPJŠ, your fee is locked for the entire degree, it never climbs mid-course. Documents to request from the Wrocław dean's office

Incomplete requests get rejected, that's stated UPJŠ policy, so collect everything first. It all goes to the Study Department, addressed to Ing. Mária Spišáková, officially translated into Slovak or English.

• Stamped transcript: with ECTS credits and completion dates for every subject.
• Full course syllabi: the detailed versions with hours and content, not the one-line course list. Ask early, these take the dean's office longest.
• Recognition route: the Application for Recognition plus proof of the per-subject payment.
• Transfer route: the signed Request for Transfer, a Letter of Authorization, and proof you're a current student in good standing.

Once accepted, registration needs a medical certificate under 3 months old, a passport or ID copy, your high-school leaving certificate and a certified birth certificate. Boring, not hard, and it's exactly the paperwork we handle free.

Košice life, and what your MDDr. is worth afterwards

Nobody leaves Wrocław because it's a bad school. People move for the fees, for family, or for the newly shortened five-year MDDr. What you get in Košice is an English programme with over 30 years of history and 1,600+ international graduates, clinical training at the teaching hospital, and a smaller city where my rent leaves room for an actual life. Degree-wise you lose nothing. The UPJŠ MDDr. is listed in Annex V, point 5.3.1 of Directive 2005/36/EC, so it's automatically recognised across the EU and EEA, Norway included. For the UK, dentists register with the GDC, not the GMC, through its EEA-qualified dentist application, and the GDC confirms EU and EEA dental qualifications remain accepted under standstill arrangements extended to June 2028. It's still a proper application you submit, not an automatic stamp, but the route is open and well trodden.

FAQ

Can I transfer my dentistry studies from Poland to Slovakia?

Yes. UPJŠ Košice accepts transfer students into its five-year English MDDr. programme through two routes: a formal transfer request by 15 August for students in good standing, or the entrance exam plus recognition of completed subjects by 15 September.

Do transfer students have to take the UPJŠ entrance exam?

Not on the formal transfer route. On the recognition route, yes: you pass the 200-question biology and chemistry exam first, then apply for recognition. You can't use both routes for the same programme in the same year.

Which subjects will UPJŠ recognise from Wrocław Medical University?

It's decided case by case, but preclinical subjects map best: anatomy, histology and embryology, biology, biochemistry, biophysics and preclinical dentistry, as long as they were completed within the last 5 years. Slovak Language 1 to 4 always has to be added at UPJŠ.

Is the MDDr. from UPJŠ recognised in the UK and the rest of the EU?

Across the EU and EEA, yes, automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC Annex V 5.3.1. In the UK, dentists apply to the GDC via the EEA-qualified dentist route, with standstill recognition arrangements extended to June 2028.
