Why Slovakia is one of Europe's smartest routes into dentistry
English-taught dentistry places are rare in Europe — and where they exist, they're usually eye-wateringly expensive or brutally oversubscribed. Slovakia is the exception on both counts.
A 5-year fast track
The MDDr. takes five years — you're a qualified dentist a full year before medicine graduates, in one of Europe's shortest routes to the chair.
An EU dental degree
Dentistry is a regulated profession under EU Directive 2005/36/EC — the MDDr. is automatically recognised across the EU and EEA, with established GDC and Helsedirektoratet routes for the UK and Norway.
€13,500 a year
UK international dental schools charge £30,000–50,000 a year — when you can even get a place. UPJŠ charges €13,500, and Košice living costs are among the EU's lowest.
One clear entrance exam
Biology and chemistry, multiple choice, no interview, no UCAT. The pass bar is higher than medicine — but it's one exam you can genuinely prepare for.
Hands-on from early years
Pre-clinical simulation training moves quickly into supervised work at the university's dental clinics — real chairside experience, not just lectures.
Dentists are in demand
The UK, Norway, Ireland and Germany all report dentist shortages. Graduates walk into a seller's market — employed or opening their own practice.
Slovakia: EU, Schengen and the euro — in the heart of Europe
Slovakia is a member of the European Union, the Schengen area and the eurozone, sitting in the centre of Europe between Austria, Czechia, Poland, Hungary and Ukraine. Its universities have taught international students in English since the early 1990s, and dentistry graduates now practise across the UK, Norway, Germany and beyond.
For dentistry specifically, that history matters: you're joining a mature, established English-taught system — with clinics, patients and examiners used to international students — not a brand-new experiment.
- EU + Schengen + euro — one currency, easy travel, full EU student rights.
- 30+ years of English-taught programmes — including an established dental faculty in Košice.
- International classmates — students from Norway, the UK, Germany, Israel and 40+ countries.
Where you'd study: Košice
Slovakia's second-largest city — around 240,000 people, more than 20,000 students, a beautiful historic centre and a European Capital of Culture (2013). Everything a student needs within a 15-minute walk.
Where you can study dentistry in Slovakia in English
Dentistry in English is offered at fewer Slovak schools than medicine — which makes choosing simpler. Here's the landscape, and why we recommend UPJŠ in Košice.

Why we recommend UPJŠ for dentistry
As UPJŠ's official partner — with our founders studying in Košice right now — we know exactly what makes its dental programme the smart choice for international students.
- A modern 5-year MDDr. — the programme was restructured from six years to five from the 2025/26 intake, so you qualify faster.
- The simplest admission route — one biology-and-chemistry exam, no interview, no UCAT. Pass and the place is yours.
- An exam sitting in Oslo — sit the entrance exam on 20 July 2026 without flying to Slovakia.
- Clinical teaching that means it — integrated with Košice's university hospital and dental clinics for real chairside training.
- Free prep tuned to this exam — Medently Flashcards and a full timed mock exam built around what UPJŠ actually tests, calibrated for dentistry's higher bar.
How to get into dentistry in Slovakia
The route is the same refreshingly clear one as medicine — one written exam decides — with a higher pass bar because dentistry places are fewer.
- A completed secondary education — high-school diploma, A-Levels, IB or your country's equivalent. UK students need three A-levels, in any subjects.
- No minimum grades — your entrance-exam performance is what counts, not your GPA.
- The written entrance exam — biology and chemistry, multiple choice, at A-level / IB standard. Aim higher than medicine applicants: recent acceptance levels sit around 620 of 800.
- Documents, translated and on time — a printed, signed application must physically reach the faculty, and the postmark date decides. We prepare, translate and track all of it for you.
- No interview, no UCAT, no BMAT, no personal statement — the exam is everything.
Exam sittings run right through the summer — pass in July or August and you start in September 2026. Registration typically closes about a week before each sitting, so there's still time.
Torn between dentistry and medicine?
UPJŠ also runs a 6-year General Medicine (MD) programme fully in English at €13,000 per year — the exact same biology-and-chemistry entrance exam, with a slightly lower pass bar (≈ 570/800).
Since it's the same exam, you can prepare once and decide late — many of our students finalise their choice after their mock-exam scores. We've written a complete separate guide to medicine in Slovakia too.
- 6 years — MD (MUDr.), EU-recognised.
- Same entrance exam — with a lower pass bar than dentistry.
- €13,000 per year — at UPJŠ in Košice.

What studying dentistry in Slovakia really costs
Five years instead of six already saves you a year of fees and living costs — and Slovak prices do the rest.
Over the full five years, tuition plus living typically adds up to roughly €105,000–115,000 all-in — in the same range as a single year or two of international dental school in the UK. Weighing your options? Compare dentistry in the Czech Republic (€14,000/year at UPOL, 15–20 places) or the 6-year medicine route at UPJŠ — we'll tell you honestly which fits, free.

One degree. A dental career anywhere in Europe.
Dentistry is a regulated profession under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, so the UPJŠ MDDr. is automatically recognised across the EU and EEA. UK graduates register with the General Dental Council (GDC), where Slovak-trained dentists have a long track record, and Norwegian graduates apply through Helsedirektoratet — the same routes our team guides students through every year.
Living in Košice as a dental student
Košice makes five demanding years genuinely enjoyable. The pastel old town runs along Hlavná ulica past Europe's easternmost Gothic cathedral; the dental clinics, gyms and cafés all sit within a compact, walkable centre; and the High Tatras are a weekend trip away when you need to switch off.
With 20,000+ students among 240,000 residents, it's a proper university city — international, sociable and cheap. Most students live well on €500–800 a month, everything included, which matters when you're budgeting five years ahead.
Medently gets you in — and it costs you nothing
We're not a call centre. Medently was built by students and doctors who sat these exact exams — and we're official university partners, not middlemen. Everything below is free, always.
