If you want to study medicine abroad from the UK, you are in good company. Why UK students study medicine abroad

How applying actually works (it is not UCAS)
You apply directly to each university, and the process is refreshingly simple. Pick your university and programme, register for an entrance exam sitting, prepare for biology and chemistry, and pass. What it costs
English-taught medicine in Europe typically costs €10,000 to €14,000 a year in tuition. At UPJŠ in Košice it is €13,000 a year for medicine, and the fee you start on is the fee you finish on, it does not increase mid-degree. Living costs in Slovakia are far below the UK, around €500 to 800 a month including rent. It is more than a home-fee UK place, but a home-fee place is exactly what thousands of applicants never get offered.
Will the GMC recognise my degree?
This is the question that matters most, so let us be precise. A medical degree from a recognised European university listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools can lead to GMC registration, and UK students graduate from European programmes and return to work in the NHS every year. Since Brexit, though, recognition is no longer automatic. Depending on when and where you qualify, the GMC either accepts a relevant European qualification directly or asks you to demonstrate your knowledge through the PLAB/UKMLA route. The rules have been evolving, so check the GMC's current guidance before you commit to a university, and choose an established, properly listed school. Can you still start in September 2026?
Yes. This is the part most UK students do not realise: European entrance exams are not a once-a-year event. Sittings run through the summer, registration stays open until about a week before each one, and we register you for free.
